The devices will be assessed under real-world operating conditions and harsh environmental influences like those in orbital satellites. Also, a new methodology will be developed to measure the detrimental effects caused by high component density.<\/p>\n<p class=\"f13 lh24\">One of this EMPIR project&#8217;s objectives is developing and validating novel measurement methods to evaluate the Passive Intermodulation (PIM) of RF electrical signals used in communications systems.<\/p>\n<p>This objective is part of work package 4, led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ptb.de\/cms\/en.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PTB<\/a>, Germany\u2019s National Metrology Institute, involved in the international standardization board <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iec.ch\/ords\/f?p=103:7:106553219852138::::FSP_ORG_ID,FSP_LANG_ID:1247,25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IEC TC 46<\/a> to provide the industry with a solid basis for evaluating its components and measurement methods.<\/p>\n<p class=\"f13 lh24\">In the last quarterly meetings of the IEC TC46, following input from the project, existing standards were revised and new standards were finalized.<\/p>\n<p class=\"f13 lh24\">The following existing standards were updated and published in November 2021:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>IEC 62037-1\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/webstore.iec.ch\/publication\/72270\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Passive RF and microwave devices, intermodulation level measurement &#8211; Part 1: General requirements and measuring methods<\/a><\/li>\n<li>IEC 62037-2\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/webstore.iec.ch\/publication\/66308\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Passive RF and microwave devices, intermodulation level measurement &#8211; Part 2: Measurement of passive intermodulation in coaxial cable assemblies<\/a><\/li>\n<li>IEC 62037-3\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/standards.globalspec.com\/std\/1534614\/IEC%2062037-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Passive RF and microwave devices, intermodulation level measurement \u2013 Part 3: Measurement of passive intermodulation in coaxial connectors<\/a><\/li>\n<li>IEC 62037-5\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/webstore.iec.ch\/publication\/72272\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Passive RF and microwave devices, intermodulation level measurement &#8211; Part 5: Measurement of passive intermodulation in filters<\/a><\/li>\n<li>IEC 62037-6\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/webstore.iec.ch\/publication\/66331\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Passive RF and microwave devices, intermodulation level measurement &#8211; Part 6: Measurement of passive intermodulation in antennas<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"f13 lh24\">In addition, the following new standards were published in November 2022:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>IEC 62037-7\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/standards.globalspec.com\/std\/14570727\/62037-7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Passive RF and Microwave devices, intermodulation level measurement &#8211; Part 7: Field measurements of passive intermodulation<\/a><\/li>\n<li>IEC 62037-8\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/standards.globalspec.com\/std\/14573707\/62037-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Passive RF and microwave devices, intermodulation level measurement\u00a0&#8211; Part\u00a08: Measurement of passive intermodulation generated by objects exposed to RF radiation<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/section><br \/>\n<div  class='avia-testimonial-wrapper av-lh8vnssy-157737cebe9b9f4708393ab3c3937137 avia-grid-testimonials avia-grid-2-testimonials avia_animate_when_almost_visible '  data-autoplay='1'  data-interval='5'  data-animation='fade'  data-hoverpause='1' >\n<section class ='avia-testimonial-row'><div class='avia-testimonial av-lh8vmbj6-2fd47cca3498955337628bbc1ff09185 avia-testimonial-row-1 avia-first-testimonial flex_column no_margin av_one_half'><div class='avia-testimonial_inner'  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia-testimonial-content '><div class='avia-testimonial-markup-entry-content'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p><em>Passive inter-modulation (PIM) has become a relevant obstacle that can lead to a drop in the data rate transmitted by the base stations of the telecommunications system. FutureCom is working on the development of reliable and reproducible PIM measurement capabilities in Europe to meet the industry demand for assessment and validation of their devices before they are integrated into the communication system.<br \/>\nIn this context, the project has carried out specific PIM measurement activities by National Metrology Institutes (NMIs) and Radio Frequency (RF) component manufacturers, which will lead to comparable PIM measurements within the European industry. This work package has developed a traceable PIM measurement system, the first of its kind in the world.
